NEW COLLECTION DESCRIPTIONS FOR THE MONTH!

The following 12 finding aids for OSU Archives collections have been completed or updated in January 2009. They have been loaded to the NWDA finding aids database and have a PDF on the OSU archives’ website and a catalog record in the OSU Libraries’ catalog, Summit, and Worldcat. Five of these are for collections acquired in 2008; six are for collections for which there was previously no information available online.

We now have 368 finding aids in NWDA.

Agricultural Sciences, College of, Photographs, 1892-2001 (P 036)

These images (1247 total) depict OSU’s academic and research programs in agriculture; Branch Experiment Stations in Oregon; faculty, students, and alumni; international programs; and special events, conferences, and workshops. Of particular note are images taken in 1913 by bacteriologist Emile Pernot of farms and slaughter houses in Benton County. The largest component of the collection is a group of 900 color slides, many taken in 2001, that depict students and faculty participating in instruction and research activities. This finding aid includes a detailed list of the photographs.

This scrapbook consists of clippings from newspapers throughout Oregon that document the film library housed at Oregon State College as part of the Visual Instruction Department.

Borg, Marcus J., Papers, 1969-2000

The Borg Papers were received by the Archives in 2008 and document the teaching, research, and writing of Marcus J. Borg, a faculty member in religious studies and philosophy at OSU from 1979 until his retirement in 2007. Borg is a widely published author and leading scholar of the life and teachings of Jesus. He was the first recipient of the Hundere Chair for Religious Studies, established in 1994 in recognition of his scholarly work. This is a preliminary collection-level description with a link to a preliminary container list.

Foote, Wilson H., Photographs, 1948-1955 (P 268)

This Wilson H. Foote Photographs consist of 241 color slides taken by Foote during his early years at Oregon State College and depict the OSC campus, students, and athletic events; agriculture and forestry; Oregon landscapes and landmarks; and landscapes of western North America. Of special note are images of football games at Bell Field, construction of the heating tunnels on campus, Native Americans fishing in the Columbia Basin (perhaps Celilo Falls), and the effects of a flood (perhaps the Vanport Flood in 1948). This collection was donated to the Archives in 2008 by Foote’s daughter. This is a preliminary collection-level description.

Home Management House Photograph Collection, 1945-1948 (P 266)

This collection of 23 photographs includes images of home economics students residing in the home management houses and several of the infants and children that lived with the Oregon State students during the mid-1940s. Beginning in 1926, infants and toddlers lived in the Oregon State home management houses and were cared for by the students and the resident advisor. These images were assembled by a home economics student and were transferred to the Archives by the OSU Foundation in 2008.

This collection consists of reports and publications generated by the Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture Collaborative Research Support Program, an international effort to develop aquacultural technology as a means of confronting food security problems in developing countries funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The Jeffersonian Literary Society Records consist of the constitution and by-laws and a program for presentations by Society members. The Jeffersonian Literary Society was formed by Oregon Agricultural College men students in 1896 to develop public speaking skills.

The Les Lloyd Papers consist of correspondence and related materials received by Lloyd from George Peavy, former Dean of the School of Forestry at Oregon State College. The correspondence pertains to the School of Forestry, alumni, Peavy’s activities during retirement, and forestry and logging topics. Leslie Darvel Lloyd graduated from Oregon State College in 1929 with a BS degree in Technical Forestry.

This small collection of four photographs depicts groups of Oregon Agricultural College students in 1905-1906 and a 1931 reunion of the Class of 1906.

Walter E. Morris assembled this small collection of four photographs of Oregon Agricultural College students during his student years at OAC. Morris, originally from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, graduated from OAC in 1912 with a BS in Commerce.

This publication was transferred to the Archives in 2008 and is a component of the Oregon Multicultural Archives.

Zobel, Donald B, Papers, 1995-2003

The Zobel Papers (acquired by the Archives in 2008) reflect Donald B. Zobel’s involvement with the Oregon Flora Project. Zobel was a faculty member in the Botany and Plant Pathology Department from 1968 until his retirement in 2003.
